Graduation morning moves quickly and emotions run high, so knowing the flow ahead of time helps you stay present instead of scrambling. Here's how the day typically goes at RTC Great Lakes.
Getting on Base
Plan to arrive early — traffic and security back up on graduation mornings because every family in the graduating divisions arrives in the same window. Everyone 18 and older needs a valid government photo ID, and every guest must have already picked up their physical ticket at the off-base Recruit Family Welcome Center — see base access & the guest ticket process for the full timeline. If you're driving onto base, you'll also need your registration and proof of insurance.
The Ceremony
Pass-in-Review is held indoors at the Midway Ceremonial Drill Hall. Doors close before it starts, so don't cut it close. The ceremony — divisions marching on, the colors, the national anthem, remarks, and the recognition of new Sailors — runs about 90 minutes to two hours. It's the emotional high point; bring tissues.
Meeting Your Sailor
After the ceremony, Sailors are released to their families. This is the reunion you traveled for. Depending on your Sailor's group, you may have on-base time or be able to head off base on liberty — see liberty after graduation.

How early should I arrive for Navy graduation?
Arrive well before the 9:00 a.m. ceremony — ideally 60 to 90 minutes early — to clear base security, park, and get seated before doors close. Grad-morning traffic is heavy.
Can I bring my kids to Navy PIR?
Yes, guests age three and older can attend if they're on the access list and counted in your Sailor's guest allotment. Bring what you need to keep young kids comfortable during the ceremony.
What do I need to get on base for graduation?
A valid government photo ID for everyone 18+, and your name on your Sailor's access list. To drive onto base you also need the gate-pass password from the CO's letter, plus vehicle registration and proof of insurance.
